It was a 12-hour marathon of golf, sunshine, sandwiches, and more golf.

Virden Collegiate student and avid golfer Will Draper combined a school project with a sport he loves and came up with the idea of a day-long fundraiser for Virden Wellview Golf Course.

“We started at 9 a.m. on June 20,” he says, “and golfed for 12 hours straight with a couple sandwich breaks in between rounds.”

Draper and his dad Jon hit the links together and by the day’s end, Will had golfed 81 holes and Jon had completed 72.

The young athlete says he collected more than $2,300 in pledges from friends, family, and fellow golfers, all of which will go to the golf course for improvements.

School Project

The Grade 12 student needed to come up with a final project for his Global Issues class at VCI.

“For the project we had to help out our community in some way and I decided to help out my local golf course in building their new clubhouse because the previous one had burnt down last spring.”

“The course was quite busy the day we had our fundraiser and with the help of the course staff, I was able to get multiple donations throughout the day.”

When it was all over, Draper said he was pretty tired but, “It was really cool seeing everybody in the community come together and help support the Virden Golf Course.”

“I’m just so fortunate by the amount of support and positive comments I received from my friends and family for doing this fundraiser.

Draper graduated from Grade 12 at VCI earlier this week. He intends to study filmmaking, get his BA and keep golfing and curling competitively.
