The annual Weekend in Elkhorn will be taking place the first weekend in August.

This event is put on by the Elkhorn Elks with different community groups taking part and looking after certain areas.

“This is the second year in this reincarnation,” said Kevin Tutthill, committee member.

The Elkhorn Chamber of Commerce had run the event for several years. The event used to run on Father’s Day weekend. It suffered a couple years of bad weather and was finally cancelled due to shortness of volunteers along with other roadblocks.

The Western Weekend was shut down for several years before the Elkhorn Elks started things up again.

New to the two-day event are a beach volleyball tournament, children’s activities, and barrel racing.

“Probably the most important event of the weekend is still the chuck wagons and chariots,” he added. “Folks really love to watch them run!”

A Saturday night social hosted by the Elkhorn Expos - the local baseball team - draws in people, many of whom may not have been in town all day but come for the social.

With an estimated number of over 1,000 people attending last year’s Western Weekend, Tutthill and the committees are gearing up for another exciting weekend in Elkhorn.

“After last year’s initial numbers, we are really hopeful for a big turnout this year!” he added. “More activities, and the buzz from last year, we are really happy to be the catalyst for this event, and it’s been our hope since inception that we could get many groups involved so that many groups profit from the event.”
