A park near Green Street will be looking a bit different this summer if a local group and the City have their way.

Bud Jobin Park, located at the intersection of Green Street and Phelan Avenue right next to the Legion’s Jubilee Residence, will get a new look thanks to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 73. The Legion’s local housing committee will continue its project to refresh the park from last summer. Flin Flon city council approved a funding application by the Legion for $5,000, covering some of the cost for the Legion’s plans for the site this summer.

The project started in earnest last summer, with the Legion housing committee removing the long-standing (and long-dormant) fountain in the park before snow fell. This year, the Legion group plans to build on the site, landscaping the area and possibly building a pagoda or bandstand structure while revitalising the park. Legion officials told The Reminder last summer that the goal of the project was to provide a maintained, fresh green space for Jubilee residents, their family members or people in the neighbourhood to meet, socialize or hold events in.

Last summer, the City approved providing $2,744 in funds to the Legion to help cover costs to take out the old fountain - the money covered about half the Legion’s costs. The park is City property and will stay that way, but the City has approved the Legion’s plans for the site.

The fountain was functional as a fountain for at least six years before it was taken out last summer and was a frequent target for vandalism in the past, with locals often sneaking soap or bubble bath fluid into it - wreaking havoc on the fountain’s plumbing in the process.

The park was partially resurfaced and renovated in 2013. Since at least 2017, the fountain was used as a planter, housing several different plants. The idea to convert the fountain into a planter was done with the cooperation of the Flin Flon Horticultural Society, who looked after the plants - that society since went on hiatus and the planter was less maintained, with one person looking after the planter as a hobby project.
