An Oil Slick

Glenn Ross finally hit the golf shot of his life, the one that he, not to mention every other duffer on this planet, has dreamt and prayed they would eventually make.

Glenn Ross finally hit the golf shot of his life, the one that he, not to mention every other duffer on this planet, has dreamt and prayed they would eventually make. Playing in the inaugural Glen “Slats and friends” Sather celebrity golf tournament in beautiful Banff National Park, Roscoe aced the eighth hole, a 178 yard par three beauty that has a long carry over water. Using a six iron (I'm betting it was a three wood) Ross flew the green, landed in the rough just behind the hole and watched in disbelief as his reddish “Volvik” trickled slowly back down the slope before disappearing into the white jar. He says he's still waiting for his alarm clock to ring and wake him up from this surreal dream.

Almost as fantastic, some would say even more, Mr. Ross also walked away with some pretty nice prizes including a $120,000 boat/trailer and a $35,000 vehicle. He also had the pleasure to play a round of golf with his foursome's celebrity, who happened to be 20 year NHL veteran, and current Flames' assistant coach, Martin Gelinas. There's going to be a lot of “storytelling” from the “Big Man” tonight when we hit the links at Wellview, and guess who's buying the drinks. Was there any doubt?

Jhonattan (yes, it's spelled that way) Vegas defended his RBC Canadian Open with a dramatic playoff win over Charlie Hoffman, who once again held the 54 hole lead but just couldn't bring it home, losing to Vegas on the first playoff hole. Canadian Brooke Henderson, who likes playing in adverse weather conditions, will be across the pond this week and will try to win her first Ricoh British Open.

How about those Blue Jays? Winners of four of five games last week with three of them being walk off home runs including two grand slams by OF Steve Pearce. Now before you run out and buy those World Series playoff tickets, these last minute game winning moon shots make for great T.V. but they obviously don't last long and before you know it, the team will slide back in the pack. Also with P Francisco Liriano being traded to the Houston Astros, it's not going to get any easier.

Paris, France will host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, not a surprising move considering it is a beautiful city, has hosted the event before and it's now Europe's turn to host the #1 sporting event in the world. But in a very different but positive thought provoking move by the IOC (International Olympic Committee), one that has never been done before, the powers to be have already agreed to give the runner up city (Los Angeles), the honour of hosting the 2028 SOG. This solves a lot of problems for the IOC and if successful, and why wouldn't it be, could become the norm in the foreseeable future. Trivia time, when did Paris, the city of lights, last host the SOG?

Not too sure why Los Angeles wants to host the money sucking Summer Olympics, but apparently the host committee has come to an agreement so they must feel they have a good, solid plan in place. But then again, so did Montreal and look how that fiasco ended up, remember Mayor Jean Drapeau and the Big “Owe”. (They were still paying for them 30 years later). But they do have two things going for them; they last hosted these Games in 1984 and much of the infrastructure (buildings) can and will be used once again, saving some really big money, plus they will now receive over a billion bucks from the IOC as “seed money”, helping them to defray some of the costs associated with getting the Games off the ground, plus unforeseen incidentals.

The 50th anniversary Canada Summer Games continue in Winnipeg and it was so good to see some Westman baseball players play on national T.V. In a game won by Manitoba (5-0) over PEI, we had Strathclair's Noah Geekie playing first and in RF, Boissevain's Jared McCorrister behind the dish and Reston's Jon Patemore pitching and playing third.  The team should now meet powerful Ontario in the playoffs.

Trivia answer, “il y a longtemps, cent annees” (I tried).  Until next time....
