An Oil Slick - July 24,2015

Jordan Spieth came so close (a couple of putts away) to winning his third straight major at The Open but it was not to be.

Jordan Spieth came so close (a couple of putts away) to winning his third straight major at The Open but it was not to be. His uncharacteristic six three-putts during the tournament and that dreadful fourputt in the final round did him in, although he courageously fought back to get into contention but to no avail. He can take solace in the fact that he is playing better golf than anyone else on the planet and he’s winning a ton of money in the process, over $8.7 mil (twice as much as #2, DJ) and we’re still in July.

It was so good to see one of the shorter hitters on the PGA T our eventually prevail at The Open, namely Zach Johnson, as opposed to one of the all time big bombers, Dustin Johnson. The difference between the two couldn’t be more obvious, length isn’t everything (according to my wife) and Zach proved it with his pinpoint wedge control and deadly putting (at one point he birdied 10 of 20 holes). Lost in all of this was Mr. Change (Tiger) who once again finished near the back of the pack. The descent continues!

The RBC Canadian Open is underway at Glen Abbey, just outside Toronto, and although Spieth is not there, there are plenty of other excellent players who were flown in from The Open to compete. Look for Weyburn’s Graham DeLaet to put in a good showing as he nears the $1 million mark in winnings. I said it before but it bears repeating, the money difference between the LPGA and PGA tours is staggering as shown by how many golfers have made over a million dollars to date: five women, 100 men.

The PanAm Games will end this weekend but not before they provide much more excitement for Canadians across this great nation. Already the Canucks have greatly exceeded expectations (160 medals as of Tuesday with 60 being gold in colour), and they will add to that impressive figure by Sunday. So many of our athletes have surpassed their personal bests and broken quite a few PanAm records.

The Blue Jays are riding high after the All Star break and if they can somehow acquire a premier starter like Detroit’s David Price, who is now on the market, it could be the difference between being in or out. The only problem is that 20 other teams are also interested and the Tigers want three future stars in return.

The MSBL playoffs are underway and it was surprising to see the two lower seeded teams, the Marlins and Cloverleafs, take the early lead by winning on the road. Whether this trend continues only time will tell, but everyone knows that the playoffs are a new season and anything can happen when a team gets hot.

The SWBL playoffs have also just started and it will see the Hamiota Red Sox (who beat the Oilers) play the Wawanesa Brewers, while the pennantwinning Boissevain Centenniels take on the Deloraine Royals.

I don’t know if you saw FIFA’s president Sepp Blatter’s news conference where an uninvited guest showered “His Majesty” with a huge handful of fake money before he was hauled away by security, but it was priceless; once again highlighting how corrupt his presidency has been due to bribery and scandals. The man has more lives than a cat as proven by the fact, and God only knows, he will stay in power until February.

I love it when star players, like the NFL’s Tom Brady, challenge their commissioner, the idiotic and incompetent Roger Goodell, daring him to proceed with the four-game suspension he levied after the “InflateGate” incident. With no hard evidence, Brady has threatened a lawsuit if the suspension isn’t cancelled. In the mean time, Goodell continues to procrastinate; what a loser!

Until next time...
