Each week in the Canada West conference, Virden’s Logan Biccum competes against some of the best women’s basketball players and teams in the country.

The daughter of Scott and Denise Biccum is in her third year of eligibility with the Brandon University Bobcats. The squad plays in U Sports, the highest level of university athletics in the country. Biccum relishes competing against the best in her sport.

“What I love most about competition is the intensity of it,” Biccum said. “I enjoy trying to be better than my opponents and love the satisfaction of winning.”

This past season the 5-foot-8 guard brought offence, mostly off the bench, for the Bobcats. She averaged a career high 2.7 points per game and shot 88.9 per cent from the free-throw line. In BU’s final game of the season, Biccum scored nine crucial points off the benchto help her team end its season on a high note – and thwart the opposing team’s playoff chances.

“Logan’s strengths are her offensive abilities,” said BU head coach Novell Thomas. “She is becoming a very good and well-rounded offensive player. She can shoot three-pointers and drive to the hoop well.”
As a veteran, Biccum is counted on for leadership. She does so through hard work.

“Logan does a very good job of leading by example,” Thomas said. “She is always in the gym developing her skills or getting stronger in the fitness centre.”

Biccum is majoring in physical education in the exercise science and fitness stream. Wanting to complete her five years of athletic eligibility, she plans to graduate in 2010. After graduation, Biccum would like to continue studies to become a physiotherapist.

“I’ve always been interested in human anatomy and the various injuries that can occur to the body,” she said. “I look forward to pursuing this once I am done at Brandon.”

Biccum is a former Virden Collegiate Institute standout. She helped the Golden Bears win the AAA provincials in 2014. Then and now, Biccum has the full support of her family.

“My family is always very enthusiastic about watching the Bobcats and I play. I am very appreciative of their support towards my basketball goals for the past four years.”

Biccum has greatly enjoyed her time suiting up for BU.

“The best part of playing for the Bobcats has been getting to spend countless hours playing my favourite sport with such great teammates and coaches,” she said. “This opportunity has been amazing.”
