The Viterra Men’s Curling Championship brought 32 of the top teams in the province to Virden last week, culminating in an exciting final on Sunday afternoon that saw Reid Carruthers and his rink win for the second year in a row.
Although the scoreboard read goose eggs for the first three ends, Carruthers and his team (West St. Paul) scored two in the fourth and ended the game and the championship with a 5-3 win over Team Lyburn (Granite Curling Club).
Carruthers said afterwards that his team is ready for the Brier men’s nationals in Brandon next month.
“It’s time to kick some butt. For us I feel like it’s time to carry the momentum into Brandon. And that’s not far down the road.”
He was full of praise for both the Virden facility and the local host committee.
“This facility is absolutely fantastic. This is one of the nicest facilities we’ve had a Provincial in, so for us it’s been wonderful. Good fan support, and the host committee has been taking care of us right down to the small things, like little things in the dressing room that made it more enjoyable.”

Carruthers’ third is Mike McEwen, a legendary curler from Brandon who will be on home turf at the Brier.
