Virden Oilers player/coach Des Koop has certainly had a huge impact on senior baseball in his hometown.
“If it wasn’t for Des, senior ball would not be a go in Virden,” said Brett Braybrook, the team’s centerfielder who shares coaching duties with Koop.
“The man knows the ins and outs of the game so well. Locally, Des has one of the greatest ball minds around. The effort he has put forth in regards to diamond prep and maintenance, always looking to put a competitive team on the field, and looking after our players has been second to none.”
Koop and the Oilers were slated to kick off the 2018 South West Baseball League season on Wednesday against Elkhorn. On Friday, the Virden team plays in Reston before travelling to Hamiota on May 30.
This Sunday the Elkhorn Expos are in Wawanesa to take on the Brewers.
Led comeback
Koop and Braybrook helped lead the revival of the Oilers back in 2015. The squad won the 2016 SWBL title.
“Once the new senior diamond was built, we were able to put a very competitive team on the field with lots of local talent,” Braybrook said.
As well as coaching and handling off field matters, Koop contributes as a pitcher and, at times, first baseman. He is a dangerous closer.
“Fun to catch for”
“When Des gets on the mound, you know he’s going to compete hard,” Oilers catcher Brady Potter said. “He uses different pitches and commands the ball well to keep hitters off balance and get outs. He’s a fun guy to catch for.”
While his focus is now on the AA Oilers, Koop also has AAA experience. He played for the Reston Rockets from 2007 to 2014 and won two Manitoba Senior Baseball League crowns.
Last season he helped Oak River win the senior provincial AAA title. Koop certainly enjoys being a part of his hometown diamond squad.
“The best part of playing for the Oilers is the guys on the team and the great community support we receive,” Koop said.
