Former Virden Oil Capitals player Rylee Zimmer is headed east.

The Russell product has committed to study and play hockey next season at York University in Toronto. He has not declared a field of study yet.

Zimmer was drawn to the institution by its quality hockey program and the interest the team showed in him.

He joined the Oil Capitals partway through last season generating 31 points, including 16 goals, in 27 games. Zimmer helped the team make it to the Manitoba Junior Hockey League finals.

“I loved my time in Virden, obviously, we were a very competitive team with a great group of guys and coaching staff.” Zimmer said on the team’s website.

“The town was always behind us and I have no bad things to say about the Virden organization. I loved it!”

MJHL Schedule

The MJHL released the schedule for the 2018-2019 season last week.

The Oil Capitals start things off in Dauphin on Sept. 22. The next night, a Sunday, the Valleyview Co-Op home opener will be held when the same teams meet at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Virden is home for two of their first four games.

The annual MJHL Showcase will be held in December in Winnipeg. Virden plays Winkler and Steinbach.

In February, with the Viterra Provincial Men’s Curling Bonspiel in town, the Oil Capitals will be on the road for seven of their 11 games.

The full schedule is on the MJHL website.
