Two local figure skaters have won bursaries from Skate Canada Manitoba in recognition of their skating excellence.

Sara Chant of Elkhorn and Shanna Yaskow of Virden will each receive the Manitoba Open Bursary, a cash prize. Yaskow had the highest score in Manitoba so will receive $250; Chant came in second receiving $150.

The Skate Canada Manitoba bursaries are awarded to Juvenile skaters based upon their total scores from their U14 and U12 results.

Stellar year for Yaskow

It’s been a good season for 12-year-old Yaskow.

She medalled twice at the Manitoba Winter Games in Thompson last month, placed second at the Manitoba sectionals and first at the Manitoba Open. She was also named most improved competitive skater by Skate Virden.

Her mom Stephanie Yaskow says Shanna is preparing for another competition next month in Edmonton where she’ll move up from Juvenile to compete at the Pre-Novice level. She’s also planning to attend skating school over the summer in Virden.

Yaskow and Chant will be recognized along with other figure skaters, coaches and volunteers from across the province at the Skate Manitoba awards gala April 28 in Winnipeg.
