Virden’s Brooklyn Roach took her first flight, as she made her way to Surrey, B.C. to play in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship with the U16 Magic.

The 15-year-old explained, “The airplane ride there was a new experience; it was the first time I’ve been on a plane which was kind of scary for me.”

The lone Manitoba team in the 20-team tournament played against teams from Alberta, B.C, and Hawaii.

“The weather was wonderful and there were no bugs which was great.” Roach said.

Magic finished the tournament in 17th place with two wins and five losses.

Being on a first flight and playing ball on the West Coast seems pretty awesome, but for Roach the highlight of the trip was being able to watch the Women’s World Softball Championship; which was taking place at the same time. “Our tournament passes got us free admission into Softball City where the tournament was being held. We were there every night.” Roach continued, “It was a great experience watching the amazing pitching and hitting, and it was inspiring seeing how hard the players worked.”

The excitement from the crowd cheering on their countries was another great experience for Roach. “My dad and I were cheering along with all of the Venezuela fans. Seeing all of the players and fans from different countries was pretty awesome.”

This is definitely an experience for the books for Roach. “It was a very fun trip and I am so glad I got to experience it with my team.”
