Provincial Volleyball

Robin's Review

The Team Manitoba Girls Youth volleyball squad leans a little left to Virden this summer.

Virden left sides Amy Lewis and Megan Nahachewsky have both earned spots on the prestigious squad, which includes players born in 2000-2002. Team Manitoba will be representing the province at the National Team Challenge Cup in Richmond, B.C., July 20-23.

“I am looking forward to playing with new girls in some high level volleyball and learning lots of new things from my amazing coaches and teammates,” Lewis wrote in an email interview.

Nahachewsky said that she is excited to meet new people. She also likes that the Winnipeg-based team will be practicing at the new Sports for Life Center. Nahachewsky is pleased to have Lewis as a teammate.

“We have never played on the same team before so it will be fun playing with her,” she wrote in an email interview. “The car trips into Winnipeg are more fun having a friend to travel with.”

Volleyball is a passion for both her and Lewis.

“I love being with my team and playing with them, having the ups and downs of games and feeling just at home on the court,” Lewis wrote. “I love the position I play and just the game itself.”

Amy Lewis

The daughter of Colleen and Jason Lewis is going into Grade 10 at Virden Collegiate Institute. She played freshman volleyball for the Golden Bears last fall and, due to a late birthday, suited for both the 14U and 15U Club West teams.

“It was so much fun to play on two teams and have two different sets of great teammates,” Lewis wrote.

This summer she is pleased to play on Team Manitoba.

“She hits hard and sees the court well on offence,” wrote Evan Turenne, one of the team’s head coaches, in an email interview. “She reads the play well on defence and, even though she's a little quiet, she implements what coaches say in her game.”

Lewis appreciates what she calls the endless support of her family.

“They drive me all around the country for the sport and don’t even complain and they cheer me on every single game. I couldn’t do it without them. My Mom got me into the sport because she used to play and I couldn’t thank her enough for it.”

Megan Nahachewsky

The daughter of Don and Tarin Nahachewsky is pleased with the opportunity to continue playing volleyball this summer – especially with Team Manitoba.

“She is a hard hitting athlete who moves well on the court,” Turenne wrote. “She always has a positive attitude, works hard and is very receptive to coach's feedback.”

Nahachewsky will be attending Grade 11 at VCI this fall. Last season she played junior varsity in high school action and club volleyball for the Brandon-based Westman Wild. Nahachewsky appreciates her family’s support of her volleyball career.

“They try to make sure they can get to all my games to watch,” she wrote. “They have always supported me and helped me grow as an athlete – cheering me on, giving me advice, and always making sure I get where I need to be. My older sister, Taylor, played volleyball, so that's probably how I ended up liking it so much – from watching her play  all  of the time.”
