Virden’s Eric Reid impressed during his first time at Manitoba’s GM Junior Men’s Championships.

The 14-year-old golfer, the son of Kent and Rochelle Reid, finished fifth in his age group. He was 28th overall among the top junior players in the province.

“The best part of playing in the GM Junior Men's Championship was competing against the best junior golfers in the province and challenging my game against some great golf courses,” Reid said. “This was my first time playing in a Golf Manitoba event so I will use the experience to get better for the next time.”

The event, which ran July 9-10 and 12-13, featured two rounds at Breezy Bend Country Club and a pair at St. Charles Country Club. Reid had two strong opening rounds of 79.

“There are some terrific junior players here in Manitoba, particularly in my age category,” Reid said. “I have gotten to know some of them pretty well and it is great to be able to compete against them throughout the summer as they will make me a better player.”

The competitor from Virden’s Wellview Golf Club started the sport when he was just five. Two years ago, he won a Maple Leaf Junior Tour event and qualified to play in the MJT National Championships in Arizona.

“The thing I most enjoy about golf is it challenges you every time you play,” Reid said. “Golf never takes it easy on you. In the course of one round you can go from feeling like you can't miss a shot to feeling like you are back to being a beginner. You will never feel like you've perfected golf.”

In addition to his golfing success, Reid has also succeeded on the ice. The goaltender has been listed by his hometown Virden Oil Capitals in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

He will be trying out for the Southwest Cougars midget AAA team for this coming season.
