Southwest Cougars' 20-year reunion coming up

A bit of the Cougar past from 20 years ago will return to Souris for a reunion next month. Between 1997 and 1999, the Southwest Cougars were AAA league champions.

A bit of the Cougar past from 20 years ago will return to Souris for a reunion next month.

Between 1997 and 1999, the Southwest Cougars were AAA league champions. They defeating the Pembina Valley Hawks both seasons to advance to the Regional Air Canada championships.

Former Souris resident, Jeff Affleck, was a member of the team and is in the process of bringing together members and staff of the two championship teams on August 10 in Souris for a reunion. It will be a day of golf, supper and fellowship.

The Cougars had 33 players from Souris, Hartney, Melita, Killarney, Virden, Reston, Wawanesa, Boissevain, Deloraine, and Brandon and was coached by Del Pedrick, Scott Coates and Todd McKay.

Bill Lawson was known as the Doc back then when he worked with the team, and Keith Kontzie was the manager.

Meanwhile, the Southwest Cougars continue to prepare for the 2018/2019 season which will see them start on the road in Kenora, Ont. the last weekend in September with a pair of games.

Registration for prospects for the Cougars preseason will be on the Cougars website with camp the weekend of September 7.
