SW Judo Students win at provincial tournament

Southwest Judo students attended a provincial tournament in Kenora, ON Apr. 22. at Lake of the Woods Open Judo Championship. The tournament was hosted by Jeffrey and Melick Judo.

Southwest Judo students attended a provincial tournament in Kenora, ON Apr. 22. at Lake of the Woods Open Judo Championship. The tournament was hosted by Jeffrey and Melick Judo.

Jesse Kruetzer U14, Riley Jorgensen U12, Tanner Dron U10, James Kreutzer U10 and Dominick Paupanekis U12 all won silver medals at the tournament. James Kreutzer U10, competed for his first time and won a fourth place.

Mike Bergman, Chief Instructor  Sensei, says, “Provincial tournaments like this one offer students a good development opportunity and builds their confidence.” He adds, “It has been a good year and we are all very proud of our athletes’ performances at Kenora.”

SW Judo is in the process of sending students to the 2017 Legion Judo Camp at the International Peace Garden’s Sport’s facilities, from Jul. 30 to Aug. 5. It is a junior level competition that offers students maximum exposure. An Olympian judo athlete will be attending to offer national level coaching for students.

Head coach of the camp,Gary Sova (6th degree black belt), announced that this year’s coaching staff will again feature many other top. Experienced coaches will teach athletes and coaches to develop top skills in gripping, dynamic throwing techniques, fundamentals, drills, counter throws, armlocks, changing directions, action/reaction, transitioning into various techniques, strangulations, pinning manoeuvers, mental preparation, and training techniques.
