Elkhorn's upcoming125th Fair

Ag Society going strong

Elkhorn Ag Society celebrates their 125th anniversary of the annual fair this weekend, July 13-14. Recently, the fair’s date was moved ahead and that has worked well.

Watch a movie under the stars, July 12. Free popcorn, bring your lawnchair and get into “Jumanji” – where four teenagers become part of a magical video game. The ultimate escape room concept -  the only way they can escape is to work together to finish the game.

Two-days of action

Ag Society President Evan Overand says there are a couple of new events in the two-day fair. “If you don’t try something, you’ll never know if it’s going to work out,” says Overand. “That’s what we did last year with the ranch rodeo, that was a really big success.”

This year, the Chore Team competition is something brand new, bringing the heavies back to town. Carla Marsh has organized this event that features what horsepower used to do for rural families.

A junior rodeo is also brand new with events for small children eight and under and the older kids, which will include calf penning, goat tying and the like.

There’s also an “unmounted” component, including a stick horse relay and mutton busting.

Working together

The grounds have been kept ship-shape this year with strong volunteer participation.

“It’s been really good this year - an excellent board with people helping to keep the grounds up.”

At the Grand Opening Friday 6:30 p.m. the Ag Society will receive donation funds – something that will help with their plans to install new washroom facilities.

“Once we get those grants, we can establish where we are at funding-wise and go from there.” Overand says it’s a project they hope to begin this fall, or next spring.

The regular fair fare includes pancake breakfasts and suppers, horse and cattle shows, and even sheep sheering; music jam, horticulture, and a stock dog demonstration this year. There’s so much to see, it will take two days to take it all in.
