After weeks of quiet, both the Elkhorn and Virden fire stations with Wallace District Fire Department had a busy weekend (Jan. 15-17).

Elkhorn station attended to two motor vehicle incidents. One on Hwy #257 near Kola where a semi and a van collided and another on Hwy #1 near Elkhorn where a semi jack knifed on a slippery highway. There were no injuries in either incident.

A semi truck travelling on Hwy #1 east of Virden caught fire Sunday night. The rear drive tires of the tractor caught on fire because of faulty brakes. Virden firefighters attended. The driver and his passenger were able to get out of the truck and the driver disconnected the tractor from the trailer. There were no injuries but the highway was shut down for about 30 minutes.
