Man charged in death of Waywayseecappo teen

On Saturday, April 11 at Waywayseecappo community a 15-year-old girl was shot and later died in hospital from the wound. A 25-year-old man from her community of Waywayseecappo First Nation has been arrested and charged.

At approximately 7:00 p.m. Manitoba First Nations Police Service responded to a report of a shot fired at a residence located on the Waywayseecappo First Nation reserve.

Officers attended the home and found a 15-year-old girl suffering from a gun shot wound. She was transported to hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

RCMP Major Crime Services along with the Manitoba First Nations Police Service carried out an investigation, arresting a man in connection with the shooting.

On April 12, RCMP charged 25-year-old Lawrence Jade Shingoose on four counts in relation to this incident:

  • Manslaughter
  • Criminal Negligence Causing Death with Firearm
  • Careless Use of a Firearm and
  • Possess Weapon Contrary to Order

Shingoose has been remanded into custody.
