Evergreen Place By Helen Martens

Hello, readers!

When I think of the month of August, which is half gone, I think of long, extremely hot days. Although according to information I found, July is the hottest month of the year in Canada. We all need to take a minute and look around and appreciate our surroundings, even when it's hot, and stay in the moment. Sometimes our worries about the future take us away from the beauty of our present day.

Some of my garden seems to have suffered because of the August heat. This year I planted Champion and Beefsteak tomatoes and they are doing alright. Beefsteak are the largest tomato and they take 75 to days to harvest. They are known for their size and meaty texture. Champion, a good sandwich tomato takes 65 days to harvest. They are especially suited for warmer regions as they tolerate both heat and dry conditions. Of 10 kinds of tomatoes tested, the Champion tomato was clearly favored.

An interesting thing for me to note is - tomatoes should be kept out of the fridge to keep their flavor. The best place to store tomatoes is on the countertop at room temperature. If you have to refrigerate them, set them out at room temperature for a day before eating them. That way some enzymes will boost the flavor back up.

We have only one birthday in August at Evergreen, Michael Campbell. The August birthstone is peridot, always light green. It is found in the volcanic lava in Hawaii and in meteorites that have fallen. People born in August are said to be generous, loyal, enthusiastic, passionate about their work and strong-willed.

Eileen Price went to Riding Mountain for a few days to visit her son Floyd. It is so good that this can be happening again since Covid restrictions in Manitoba have eased up.

My sister, Katherine Klassen from Colorado is in Manitoba for a few weeks to visit her daughters Martha and Becky and their families. She is my only sibling so I get to spend time with her as well. Having not seen her for a few years, we are having a great time together.

Marlene Balzar's son Rick of Winnipeg, and daughter Leona of Rosser spent a few days in Virden visiting Marlene. They included a visit with her daughter Maureen at Oak Lake Beach.

Albert Einstein left us with some wisdom, "Life is like riding a bicycle, to keep your balance you must keep moving."

Quote for the Day: "Think of your family today and every day thereafter, don't let the busy world of today keep you from showing how much you love and appreciate your family."

This week’s quote was written by John Lennon:

“When you do something beautiful and nobody noticed, do not be sad. For the sun every morning is a beautiful spectacle and yet most of the audience still sleeps.”
