Monday, March 8, was a bad day for semi drivers and a busy one for Wallace District Fire Department.  Both fire stations were called out to fires involving semi trucks.

Elkhorn station responded to a semi on fire at the Kirkella rest stop. Fire Chief Brad Yochim reports: “The truck was fully involved on our arrival. The driver and his dog were out of the truck when it started. The truck was a total loss with some damage to the trailer.

Two hours later Virden firefighters responded to a semi fire on Hwy No. 83 just south of the Hwy No.1 junction. The fire was contained to the rear tires of the truck and the front of the trailer which contained corn. The driver was able to get out of the truck and tried to disconnect the trailer but was unable to.
