October has been a busy month here at Virden Collegiate. Volleyball was in full swing, the hockey team was practicing hard for their first games in early November and the football season was concluded. The football team played seven league games this season winning three of these. They placed fourth overall in their league of eight teams. Virden was knocked out of the playoffs in the semi-finals, when they played against the league’s top team, the Swan Valley Tigers, and lost 28-6.

The Bears hockey team practiced for all of October, and played three games on Nov. 3, 6 and 8. On Nov.3, they played McCreary and won 8-5. On Nov. 6, the Bears played Major Pratt and pulled out a victory with the score 6-5. Our team also won against Deloraine on Nov. 8 with a score of 7-4. They will have their next home game on Saturday, Nov. 23 against Sandy Bay at 6:30 p.m.

This year we have four volleyball teams, Gr. 9 Junior Varsity girls, Gr. 10 Junior Varsity girls, Varsity girls, and Junior Varsity boys, all of whom were kept busy for all of October. The JV boys hosted a tournament on Oct. 18-19 and went undefeated until their final game when they lost to Hamiota, placing second in the tournament. Varsity girls played four regular games and won three of them and also played in two tournaments this month. Grade 10 JV girls played nine regular games and won four. They played in three tournaments, one of which was hosted in Virden that they won. The Gr. 9 JV girls played in two tournaments, the Virden Fall Classic and Neepawa JV Tournament.

Outside of sports, we wrapped up our keychain sales at the beginning of the month. At the end of the month, we enjoyed a spirit week where students and teachers all around the school dressed in denim, trendy outfits, twin costumes, Halloween costumes, and retro outfits throughout the week. During the whole month of October, our school collected socks for those in need for a campaign called Socktober. We are looking forward to another great month here at Virden Collegiate!
