The Virden Oil Capitals have reportedly added a veteran forward at the Manitoba Junior Hockey League deadline.

The team has acquired 20-year-old forward Tanner McKechnie from the Swan Valley Stampeders for future considerations. The Oil Caps had a roster spot open and were able to successfully add without subtracting.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound McKechnie had seven goals, 20 points, and 57 penalty minutes for the Stampeders this season.

He’s had an interesting junior career. The Regina product played as an 18-year-old in Texas for the El Paso Rhinos of the Western States Hockey League. He split last season between the Estevan Bruins and Swan Valley Stampeders.

With the deal, the Oil Caps now have:

-Two Tanners, including hometown product Tanner Andrew.

-Three players from Saskatchewan: McKechnie, Austin Johnson from Moosomin, and Dalton Dosch from Willow Bunch.

-Five 20-year-olds: McKechnie, Ben Dalke, Blake Sidoni, Tristen Cross (from Virden), and Brock Shwaluk.
