The skatepark committee in Virden, consisting of Donna Hunter President, Miranda Dryden-Careme Vice-President, Secretary Marla Wilson, Treasurer Lynette Grumpelt, and board members Eduardo Giannico, Lorraine Davidson, Kim Bjornsson, Barb Finley, Dalton Wilson, and Lauren Gabrielle continue in their efforts to raise money for the proposed skatepark.

The skatepark location has been confirmed as where the present Lion’s playground is, across from Goulter School (corner of fifth St. and Lions). The 9,000 sq. ft. location will host a 6,500 sq. ft. concrete skateboard park with benches and a landscaped area for sitting.

Removal and an on-site auction of the current playground equipment are in the works for this summer. Following will be excavation of the grounds, in preparation for cement to be poured. Lastly will be beautification of the park. The committee is working closely with the Town of Virden and hopes to see the park completed by next fall, but realistically expects completion in the spring of 2018.

Skatepark President, Donna Hunter, says that approximately 20 percent of the $275,000 budget has been raised. One grant for funds has been accepted, and the committee is in the process of applying for many more. However, fundraisers such as the annual “Clause For Celebration” Christmas party held last winter, Paint Nights, and the Via Rail Raffle have aided immensely in the progress.

The Virden Annual 10K Run & 3K Family Fun Run/Walk is in its seventh year. This is the second year, as a volunteer group, Virden Skatepark will assist on the day of the run. “We volunteer for the run, to help them,” explains Hunter. Proceeds from the run will help the skatepark. A call for 30 volunteers is being made to assist and ensure the safety of runners. Volunteering is an opportunity for young people who will use the future skatepark to become involved and participate with fundraising efforts.
