Elks and Elkhorn celebrate the coronation

May 6 was a special day and the Elkhorn Elks spared no details in recognizing the occasion.

The Elkhorn Elks Club hosted a celebration to mark the coronation of King Charles III, the first such regal occasion since his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, was crowned back in 1956. The afternoon event, held in the Elks Hall, followed the two-hour official ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London, England where Charles and his wife Camilla became the new heads of the Commonwealth. That program, which was televised live during the night hours in Manitoba due to the time difference, was rebroadcast on a large projection screen in the Elks Hall.

About 70 people from Elkhorn, Virden, Pipestone and the surrounding area, many in Royal/British outfits, joined in for the festivities. There was high tea, crumpets, decorated cupcakes, and some British adult beverages to try at the “Picadilly Pub.”

Two trivia games, “Walk With The Windsors” and “Royal Rumble,” were a highlight and tested knowledge of all things Royal. Prizes were given out for the most correct answers.

Visitors had the opportunity to view a display of memorabilia, including photos, books and newspaper clippings depicting the life of Charles, Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the Royal Family.

Elkhorn photographer Smantha Cluett set up a photo booth, where guests could have their picture taken with a large life-size cut out of King Charles or several other props.

A traditional British supper with two entrée choices, Bangers & Mash or Shepherd’s Pie, was served in the evening to cap off the celebration.
