Hayward wins national championship

SPORTS NOTES: Curler with Virden ties leads her rink to a Canadian Under-18 Women’s Curling Championship title and Oak Lake's Tyson Draper is named CCM Hockey Forward for January.

A talented curler with Virden ties led her Manitoba rink to the province’s first Canadian Under-18 Women’s Curling Championship title lm ear;y February.

Carman’s Shaela Hayward rink beat Quebec's Jolianne Fortin 8-5 in the women's final in Ottawa. Hayward is the daughter of the rink’s coach Diane Hayward and former Virden resident Darcy Hayward. Not only was it the Keystone Province’s first women’s championship at that level, but it was also Manitoba’s first women’s medal in the event’s six-year history.

The Hayward rink was 4-2 in Pool C. In the playoffs, it won four games to earn the championship. The rink included vice-skip Keira Krahn, second India Young, and lead Rylie Cox.

Draper Top Forward

Oak Lake Beach’s Tyson Draper was recently named the CCM Hockey Forward of the Month for January in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League. The Southwest Cougars standout had a point in eight of the 10 games he played. Draper recorded seven goals and eight assists for 15 points.
