Another strong player arises from Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.

Sioux Valley Dakota Nation’s Jeremiah Jacques has been named to Team Manitoba for the 2022 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships.

The event will be hosted May 8-14 by the Membertou First Nation on Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The 17-year-old Jacques currently plays for the Brandon U18 AAA Wheat Kings.

“We are so proud of his selection to the team,” U18 AAA Wheat Kings manager Mike Brolund said. “It is recognition of the hard work he has put in over the years. He has had a lot of challenges to overcome and keeps battling away. That’s probably one of his strengths, his ability to battle. He also possesses tremendous skills with the puck. He is so strong along the wall with his big body and great positioning. Not often that he doesn’t win the battle for the puck.”

A 6-foot, 215-pound forward, Jacques has six goals and 14 points in 48 games this season. His Manitoba Junior Hockey League rights are owned by the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.

Other players with area connections named to Team Manitoba include Ben Roulette from Sandy Bay, who plays for the U18 AAA Yellowhead Chiefs and whose draft rights are owned by Waywayseecappo; Killarney’s Dawson Andires, who plays for the Southwest Cougars and is a Virden Oil Capitals draft pick; and Matthew Renville, a Winnipegger who was drafted by the Oil Caps. Glenboro’s Sophia Anderson of the Westman Wildcats was named to the female Team Manitoba.
