NBeezwax: a hands-on approach at learning about business

This semester at the North Battleford Comprehensive High School, my Entrepreneurship 30 class had the opportunity to learn and create a business with a “hands-on” experience.

This semester at the North Battleford Comprehensive High School, my Entrepreneurship 30 class had the opportunity to learn and create a business with a “hands-on” experience.

The class created a business by deciding what we wanted to sell, coming up with a name, creating all the products, packaging them, marketing our business and selling the products.

At the start of the class, each of the six students applied for positions in the business. We had the CEO Brianna Barclay, vice-president of finance Ryan Dyck, vice-president of production Cameron Taylor, vice-president of human resources Hunter Delorme, vice-president of information and technology Rianna Crespo and vice-president of health and safety Tamara Scepanovic.

We created a company called NBeezwax and we made products from beeswax. Our class researched formulas to make lip chap, hair paste and moisturizer. We then created these products and packaged them. We sold them at NBCHS, the farmers market, the Living Sky Student Hall of Fame awards and the Living Sky School Division central office.

We learned making a business successful takes hard work to get rolling, to get your name in the community and to build your brand. Supply and demand is a real thing.

As the semester ends and we are closing out our business, selling the last of our products, closing our books and making a donation to the Battlefords Humane Society, we all agree that this was a great way to learn and will definitely help us in the future.
