RCMP investigate assault in Virden and missing cattle near Kola

During this week Westman RCMP received a total of 79 calls for service which included 23 traffic files, one assault with a weapon, three assaults, three break and enters, three uttering threats, three mischief files, two roadside suspensions an impaired file.

Nov. 26

While patrolling in Virden RCMP made two separate traffic stops and requested mandatory ASD breath samples. Both drivers provided two samples of warnings. Each driver was issued a 72-hour licence suspension, three-day vehicle impoundment and $400 administration penalty.

RCMP received a report of an assault in Virden. Police attended and spoke with the victim who stated he was choked and assaulted by his step-daughter. He removed her from the house and she caused damage to the door afterwards. RCMP located and arrested the accused. She was charged with assault while choking and mischief under $5,000. She was released on an order with a December court date.

When patrolling in Virden, a vehicle passed officers and had excessive exhaust noise. RCMP stopped the vehicle and discovered the driver was disqualified from driving and was subsequently fined $672 for driving disqualified. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Nov. 27

RCMP were patrolling school zones in Virden when a vehicle was observed to be speeding at 49 km/hr in a 30 km/hr school zone as children were arriving for the start of school. The driver was stopped and fined $299 for speeding.

RCMP are investigating the case of three missing cattle. They received a report that three black steers went missing from pasture land north of Kola. The cattle are branded and ear tagged. If anyone has information regarding these cattle, please contact Virden RCMP Detachment at 204-748-2046 Ext. #3.

While patrolling Hwy 2 in the RM of Pipestone police observed a vehicle with inactive insurance. The vehicle owner was fined $298 for driving an unregistered vehicle and $672 for driving without motor vehicle liability insurance.

A speeding vehicle on Hwy 257 in the RM of Wallace-Woodworth was pulled over. Police discovered the vehicle insurance and the drivers’ licence were both expired. The driver was fined $298 for driving an unregistered vehicle, $672 for driving without liability insurance and $298 for driving without a valid licence.

Nov. 29

A driver was found to be speeding in Sioux Valley community on Hwy 21 and was fined $521 for travelling at 96 km/hr in the 60 km/hr zone.

During a highway patrol of Hwy 2, RCMP observed two vehicles that failed to stop at the stop sign at the junction of Hwy 2 and Hwy 21. The first driver was fined $203 for disobey traffic control device. The second driver had inactive insurance and was fined $203 for not stopping and $672 for driving without liability insurance.

RCMP received a report of a break and enter in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation (SVDN). The complainant stated three people entered his house through the basement, armed with shotguns and wanted to harm him. RCMP attended and cleared the residence but did not find signs of forced entry, unwanted persons or weapons. With no leads or signs of criminal offences, police concluded their investigation.

RCMP received a report of threats in SVDN. The community’s Safety Officers stated they attended a call and the complainant’s son threatened to shoot them. The Safety Officers did not wish to press charges. RCMP spoke with all parties involved and have concluded their involvement.

In another report of threats in SVDN the caller stated that her son was at her residence trying to kick her and threating to assault her. Members attended and spoke with the complainant. She no longer wished to press charges but would look into other legal avenues. The suspect was gone. Police concluded their involvement at the complainants’ request.

Nov. 30

RCMP received a report of mischief in SVDN. The caller stated her son was staying with her and was trashing the basement. Police attended and spoke with the complainant who then stated she did not need police assistance and that her son was ok to stay with her. 

RCMP received a report of a break and enter in the RM of Sifton. The caller reported his shop lock was cut and entry was made. Nothing of value was stolen. There are no leads or witnesses at this time.

Dec. 1

RCMP were dispatched to a hotel in Virden for an assault. Members attended and spoke with the female victim who stated her boyfriend threw a coffee table at her and assaulted her. RCMP located the man in the room and arrested him. He was charged with two counts of assault and released on an order with a December court date.

Dec. 2

RCMP were dispatched to SVDN for a report of an individual walking around carrying a machete. The caller was concerned as the male appeared paranoid and was talking to himself. The male was located. He was on release order conditions to stay in Winnipeg and not to possess weapons. He was charged with two counts of failure to comply with conditions, one count of carrying a concealed weapon, and was remanded into custody.

RCMP were dispatched to the scene of a female in distress walking on Hwy 21 in SVDN. She said she’d been assaulted by her common law partner. Police drove her to a safe location. She informed then she’d been thrown to the ground and pinned down during the assault. The male was arrested and charged with two counts of failing to comply with a release order and one count of assault. He was taken into custody.
