Waywayseecappo Detachment – Police Update: On the early morning hours of June 1, 2022, Manitoba
First Nations Police service (MFNPS) received a report of shots fired at a residence in the community.
MFNPS Officers attended the area of the residence, where a single gunshot was heard in the immediate area.
A second call was received from the residence advising that one male was shot, and another female had overdosed on pills. MFNPS officers attended to the house and located the injured male subject and unconscious female. Both subjects were provided medical assistance as Officers continued to investigate, as the whereabouts of the suspect was still not known at the time.
MFNPS Officers along with the MFNPS Canine Unit proceeded to search for the suspect. The deceased was located a short distance from the scene with what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The injured male and female were transported to the hospital in stable condition. MFNPS is actively investigating this matter and requesting the public’s assistance for information on this incident.

Waywayseecappo First Nation reserve is located about 35 minutes north-east of Birtle. According to Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada about 2800 people are registered with the reserve. About 1600 live within the community.
