Parsnip

A small, isolated patch of wild parsnip has been located in Estevan’s Pleasantdale valley.

In a statement released Tuesday morning, the City of Estevan said the plants have been treated with herbicide for control, and are still standing while the herbicide takes its course.

Wild parsnip is a designated noxious species known to cause a burn-like rash if the chemicals (furanocoumarins) in the plant system come into contact with human skin, especially when the infected skin is exposed to the sun.

For safety purposes, please refrain from touching these plants. They are expected to die off and dry up shortly. This minor infestation was caught early and will be monitored for effective control measures.

If anyone sees any others cases, please call the City of Estevan’s parks division at 306-634-1880.
