A Winnipeg police officer has come under investigation following a vehicle collision on Highway One. He’s been ticketed and the matter is still before the courts.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has concluded its investigation into a motor vehicle collision on the divided four-lane portion of the Trans-Canada Highway in the Rural Municipality of Reynolds involving Winnipeg Police members and a civilian vehicle.  The collision took place and was reported to the IIU on January 31, 2023. Upon receiving additional information about the collision on February 23, 2023, the civilian director of the IIU determined it was in the public interest to assume conduct of the investigation from the RCMP.

As a result of the investigation, Winnipeg Police Service Const. Ian Case has been issued a Provincial Offences Act ticket for careless driving, contrary to Sec. 188(2) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) and making an unauthorized U-turn, contrary to Sec. 191(a) of the HTA.

The IIU issued a news release on February 17, 2023, advising that it had launched an investigation into the incident.

As this matter is now before the courts, the IIU will not comment further.
