Canada’s youngest golfing sensation continues to make news and history as 18 year old Brooke Henderson won her 3rd LPGA event, going wire to wire in defending the title she won last year. After winning her first major last month, the #2 ranked golfer now has her sights on winning two in a row as she is one of the favourites in the U.S. Open currently being played in California. Trivia time, only 2 other female Canadian golfers have more LPGA wins, name them?

Just to show everyone it wasn’t a fluke, DJ (Dustin Johnson), in his first tournament since winning the US Open, wins the World Golf Championship, repeating last year’s performance.

Never has there been a better time to be a free agent in the professional hockey world as NHL owners are literally throwing huge wads of cash at anybody who can put the “biscuit in the basket”. Free agent frenzy hit a fever pitch last week as over $600 million worth of contracts (tripling last year’s amount) were signed by some very happy UFA’s. Owners who think that their franchises are only a player or two away from bringing home Lord Stanley’s prized possession were more than willing to open their wallets and sign players to expensive long term deals. Some of these will work out just fine, however, most will end up being ugly disasters.

Some of the bigger deals that changed the NHL landscape were; Milan Lucic to the Oilers and Kyle Okposo to the Sabres for $42 million over 7 years, Andrew Shaw to Montreal, David Backes to the Bruins, Jason Demers to Panthers, Eric Staal to the Wild, Loui Eriksson to the Canucks, Andrew Ladd to my Islanders and a host of others. And let us not forget the 2 biggest trades that shook up the NHL before the FA frenzy even started, Shea Weber (who will be a game changer because of his size and reputation) swapping teams with PK Subban (an all star but not a team man, internal problems with the coaching staff), plus top 4 D-man Adam Larsson going to Edmonton with young sniper Taylor Hall going the other way to “Joisey”. Almost everyone thinks that the Predators and the Devils got the better of the trades but I think time will prove otherwise. Habs also signed Russian Radulov, are they asking for trouble?

The Blue and Gold should feel pretty “blue” after their woeful efforts in losing their first 2 games of the season, both against the so called weaker CFL teams, Toronto and Montreal. The team was lifeless, the offence had no pulse and the defence was a piece of Swiss cheese but the scary part, their next 5 games are against the better teams in the league. Not Good!

Would you say Luck was lucky? Not this time. By signing a 6 year, $140 million contract with the Colts, Andrew Luck simply joins the other top rated QB’s on top of the salary scale.

Big news out of the NBA has 6’9” KD (Kevin Durant) leaving OKC (Thunder) to sign on with the GS Warriors, making the pennant winners (but not the champions) even stronger. The former MVP will make $26 million a year and together with the Splash Brothers, will be unbeatable.

Is Cleveland turning into a new version of an old New York City? Usually perennial doormats in all their professional sports teams, they are now enjoying basking in the limelight as their Cavaliers win the NBA and now their Indians are in 1st place, winning 15/17 games.

With the Rio Olympics less than a month away, some of the best golfers in the world (Day, MclLroy, McDowell) are staying away, because of concerns over health, re: the Zika virus.

The SWBL regular season is now over and the playoffs are suppose to start tonight but because some teams are tied, like the Oilers and Dodgers, match ups are confusing. There may have to be tiebreakers played so deciding who plays who will be a last minute call. Trivia answer, Sandra Post (8) and Lori Kane (4).

Until next time....
