Support for the recovery of our Lake Winnipeg waters has been undermined, as the Pallister's Conservative government introduces The Red Tape and Government Efficiency Act. (re: Wpg PressReader, Mar. 18. ‘Once you kill Lake Winnipeg, you can't put it back’.)

It’s a sad state of government affairs when the studies of science are set aside; because the facts are not in the government’s liking, and water pollution concerns are abandoned.

I live 400 kilometres from Lake Winnipeg, and my concerns, as with thousands of Manitobans, is for the recovery of those waters. I do not have the opportunity to visit the lake area as often as the people of Winnipeg, but my efforts have always been in the best interest of having those waters returned to a healthy state.

Saving our waters is of the utmost importance, not only for ourselves, but also for the generations that will follow.

There is a responsibility for all of us, an obligation, and a trust that must never be ignored or taken lightly. For during our time here, we have been entrusted to be the ‘stewards’ of this planet.

Yet so often we shamefully ignore this responsibility that has been bestowed upon us. We often fail in gratitude and respect. Our abundance of fresh water is usually taken for granted, and sadly, we have become complacent about the very liquid that sustains all life.

I would urge every reader, every household, every Manitoban, and every Canadian to unite in support of a ‘recovery program’ to save our Lake Winnipeg and the waters of our Nation.

As for government, I can only hope, that ‘Second Sober and Sensible Thoughts’ will materialize and make water protection an ongoing, high priority. Our very existence depends on clean “water”.

Thank You

John Fefchak, Virden, MB
