Dear Editor:

I have been unsuccessful in finding out how the Virden Golden Bears made out playing for the Murray Black Cup this year.

I coached the Golden Bears way back in 1967 when we won the championship with some real great players, like the late Allan Taylor (I boarded at his home), Bobby Whiteford ,Fraser McIntosh and Dale McEwen who I kept in touch with when he moved to Winnipeg.

I took over the team from Glenn McKinnon two weeks before the season started because his wife was about to give birth and had the pleasure of coaching a great bunch of kids who were probably a couple of years younger than myself. I was working as a salesman for the Ashdown Hardware Company and Virden and the Taylor home was my base. I had played football in Winnipeg and Glenn figured I knew enough about the game to coach the team. We had a great bunch and practiced hard and played harder with many players playing offence and defence.

Living in Virden was probably one of the best experiences of my life and I was proud to have coached there and made some great friends.
