A bit of the Cougar past from 20 years ago will return to Souris for a reunion next month. Between 1997 and 1999, the Southwest Cougars were AAA league champions.

The Virden Oilers 15U finished second in the Oildome League. That gave us the right to go to the “A” provincials in Rosenort. We went undefeated in the round robin, beat Hamiota in the semi-final but lost out to the Blumenort Red Sox in the final.

Three defencemen who have suited up for the Virden Oil Capitals saw action recently at National Hockey League development camps.

Former Virden resident Zane Sawyer is enjoying yet another successful baseball season. Last summer Sawyer was the South West Baseball League’s Co-MVP, with Deloraine’s Mitch Olson, while playing for the Virden Oilers.

This past school year, Sky Brown’s family firmly supported her as she defended the crease in two sports. The daughter of Orville and Kim Brown played her fourth and final hockey season for the University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s hockey team.
